Guides / Uptime Kuma
Run Uptime Kuma
Uptime Kuma checks your websites and services from the outside and alerts you when one goes down. natbox servers are Linux containers, so the usual Docker install does not work here. Use the one-click install instead.
1. Install it
Choose Uptime Kuma as the one-click app when you order a server, or when you reinstall one (a reinstall erases the server). It takes a few minutes. The App tab in the client area then shows the address, on your first extra port:
http://natbox.io:10001
2. Create your account straight away
Open the address and create the admin account. Until you do, anyone who finds the page can create it, so do this first. This address uses plain HTTP, so set up the domain in step 4 before you use it regularly.
3. Add what you want to watch
- HTTP(s) for a website: it checks the page loads, and can warn you before a certificate expires.
- TCP Port for a service such as a game server, for example
natbox.io:10051. - Keyword to check that a page really contains the text you expect.
Then add a notification, such as Telegram, Discord or email through a mail API, under Settings. Press Test to check it arrives. Email cannot use ports 25, 465 or 587 (what to do instead).
4. Use your own domain with HTTPS
Link a domain in the client area, such as status.example.com, then install Caddy (guide) and put this in /etc/caddy/Caddyfile, using your own port:
status.example.com {
reverse_proxy localhost:10001
}
systemctl reload caddy
Caddy passes the live connection the dashboard needs, and gets the certificate by itself.
Good to know
- Watch from somewhere else. A monitor cannot tell you that its own server is down. Run Uptime Kuma on a different server, or at another provider, from what it watches.
- It also listens on IPv6 on the same port. If you only want the domain, block that port with the IPv6 firewall.
- Every check uses a little bandwidth. Hundreds of checks a minute add up against your monthly allowance.
- Keep your own copy of the data in
/opt/uptime-kuma/app/data. A reinstall erases it.
Recommended plan: Box, the smallest plan that offers this one-click app.
